Have you smiled today? It is a simple question, but really, think about it: Did I smile today? Genuinely?
If you did: good job! If you did not, let’s work on that! The Huffington Post lists 11 reasons why you should smile every day:
1. Smiling can improve your mood.
Your mood is influenced by your facial expressions, so when you smile a lot, your mood will improve!
2. Even fake smiles do the trick.
Yes, crazy right? Despite your existing mood, even a forced smile can make you feel happy. I say, fake it ’till you make it!
3. Smiling helps reduce stress.
And who likes stress?
4. Smiling makes you more approachable.
People that smile more are perceived nicer than people that do not!
5. A smile makes you seem more trustworthy.
Similar to the previous point, from a psychological perspective, a person who is smiling seems more trustworthy than a person who is not.
6. Smiling retrains your brain for the better.
Apparently your brain naturally thinks in negative terms as a defense mechanism, but when you smile frequently, you help your brain to think more positively.
7. Smiles are contagious.
According to neuroscientist Marco Iacoboni, we all posses something called mirror neurons. These are cells that are activated when we witness someone performing an action, which is why when someone smiles, we (usually) respond by smiling as well.
8. Smiles may strengthen the body on a cellular level.
When we smile, we physically relax and this helps combat the risk of cell mutations leading to the development or persistence of various cancers. Amazing, right?!
9. Smiling boosts your productivity.
In 2010, a team of researchers found that happiness has a positive effect on your productivity in the workplace.
10. Smiling makes you more creative.
A study from the University of California found that happy people have a better approach to problems, because of their ability to think of more solutions, which negative-minded people usually do not have.
11. Smiles are free!
Well, if that does not convince you, I am not sure what… no actually, I am sure it did! 🙂
There is always a reason
I often have people ask me why I smile so much. My answer is always: I do not have a reason not to smile! No matter how much you are drowning in stress or how unhappy you are with a certain situation, there is always something to be grateful about. Can you see? Can you walk? Can you hear? Do you have family? Do you have a roof above your head? There! You already have five reasons for smiling today. 😉
