Life is mostly about making decisions and learning from them. The older we get, the more experiences we have and the easier our choices become… right? It seems, though, as if this uncertainty about “what to do” remains throughout many stages of our lives, if not all. I mean, what is the right thing to do? How can we ever know for sure?
Do we follow our heart? Do we chase money? Do we please our friends and family? It is very difficult to pick the right motives to guide us, because how do we know what will make us happy? We cannot look into the future and sometimes we simply cannot or do not want to ask for advice. Not knowing what the right decision is in situations can be very frustrating and make us feel helpless.
What to do when you don’t know what to do
Many people have these exact same fears, uncertainties and questions. It’s normal, it’s life. But we should not dwell in this stage for very long; we have to keep on going. We certainly do not always know what the right thing to do is, but pondering about it will not do you any good either. Instead, let’s focus on what we can do in such situations.
One thing that can help us when making hard decisions is thinking about the consequences of our choices. Ask yourself:
If I choose to do this, what will be the result?
Then think about the short-term or long-term goals you have. Are the potential losses of your action worth the gains? Based on that calculation, you can decide what decision is best for you. In that regard, you know you are doing the right thing if you believe it will get you the outcome you are aiming for.
If you don’t know the consequences of your actions, you cannot hold yourself accountable for the outcome. In life, you’ll have to take risks. But for any decision you make, there has to be a reason why you’re doing it. So as long as you stand behind your decision, you are doing the right thing. Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Life is just one big basket of lessons. In the end, what we did not do matters more than what we have done.
